The idea for Janet Jackson Appreciation Day began in 2018 as a way to show support for Janet after her career was nearly derailed when Justin Timberlake accidentally exposed her breast on stage during her 2004 Super Bowl performance while Justin's career was left untouched.

Justin Timberlake was invited to headline the halftime show at Super Bowl 52 last year, whereas, Janet was banned and has never been asked back to perform at the Super Bowl after the incident.
So, as Justin prepared for his show at the Super Bowl in 2018, fans took to Twitter to pay tribute to Janet by making the hashtag #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay trend. Janet's fans continued with the trend this year.
